The 1000 Lire bimetallic coin, which was minted in 1997 with a European map is endowed with 2 incredible features: On the one hand, Germany appeared to have merged overnight with the Netherlands, as the Dutch-German border was omitted on this coin.

On the other hand, the outlines of Germany in the borders of the Eastern part are displayed as those prior to the reunification.

Subsequent to the protests of the German government only 1 year later, a 1000 Lire coin consisting of the correct borderlines was issued.
