Having been exiled to the island of Elba in May 1814, the notorious French leader Napoleon Bonaparte returned to France on March the 1st 1815, marching to Paris to take control of the French Capital.
Having fled the capital to seek safety, the then King, Louis XVIII, called on the support of the Duke of Wellington, his allied army, and the Prussian armed forces led by Gebhard Lebrecht Von Blucher to overthrow the powerful dictator. Despite having fought various fierce battles, the most significant of them all and the one that brought about the end to Napoleon's long conquest of Europe was the famous Battle of Waterloo.
Napoleon committed tactical errors and acted indecisively which ultimately led to the death of more than 33,000 of his troops at the hands of the British and Prussian troops.
In commemoration of this historic battle, this beautiful 1/2oz Silver Coin set honours the three renowned leaders principally involved in Napoleon’s final battle, each on their own coloured coin. These three leaders are Napoleon Bonaparte, The Duke of Wellington, and Gebhard Lebrecht Von Blucher. The obverse of each coin depicts the famous Royal Arms of Gibraltar, exhibiting its legal tender status.
