The Three Graces Coin design was initially created in 1847 following a unique collaboration between renowned engraver William Wyon and his mentor John Flaxman. The latter was recognised as a champion of neoclassicism, sourcing his inspiration for coin designs from stories of Ancient Greece and Rome.
The Three Graces design depicts three female figures in a classical style. The central figure standing taller than her opposite lover is recognised as Britannia and represents England. At the feet of the three women the harp, a shield bearing the cross of Saint George, and an oversized thistle are viewed as representations of Ireland, England and Scotland.
Whilst very few coins were struck with this iconic reverse design, in 2020 the William Wyons design was entered into The Great Engravers Collection, with variations of the design released on Silver and Gold Coins. This was an extremely popular release which has brought the design back into the public conscience.
