Said to have ruled the world for around 174 million years, Dinosaurs are some of the largest and most fearsome beasts to have ever roamed the planet. Scientists recognise that the giant animals evolved from dog and horse-sized creatures, living in a whole diversity of environments from swamp forests and tropical rainforests to the plains of the deserts.
Presently, only around 700 species of dinosaurs have been discovered, however, there is a shared understanding that this represents just a small fraction of how many dinosaurs really existed. It is the job of Palaeontologists to unearth the remains of species, drawing clues about their existence from fossils left behind by the extinct animals – whilst difficult to find, these relics are prevalent in popular public spaces such as beaches, bays, and other rural areas.
In recent decades, significant progress has been made in uncovering new species of Dinosaur, and a major discovery worth noting is the unearthing of the Mercuriceratops species back in 2014 by Canadian excavators, a breed that had remained undiscovered for around 76 million years. Following the discovery of unique fossils in Montana and Alberta, Canadian excavators were able to uncover the horned herbivore and correlate the remains to a past species.
The animal is depicted in authentic detail on the reverse of this Coin struck in the renowned ‘four nines’ silver, a common tenet of Royal Canadian Mint releases. The Black Rhodium plating provides a fossilized effect, giving great contrast with the plated rock texture that distinguishes the dinosaur’s fossil on the reverse.
Depicted in the obverse of this release is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, demonstrating its legal tender status.
This is an extremely limited-edition release, and represents the first time this Dinosaur has appeared on a coin! Housed in a Premium Black Box, your coin will be secured and presented superbly.
