In 1674, the French set up a trading post in Puducherry in India, and continued to expand this. Ultimately, the settlement became the capital city of the French colonies in India.
In spite of numerous difficulties, the colonies remained under French control until India became independent in 1948.
The 1 Fanon coin, made of real silver, was issued between 1738 and 1792. It was worth 1/5 Rupees and was minted in the mint at Mahé, another colony in South West India.
On the coin, you can see the year of minting and the name of the “Compagnie française” and a “P” for Punducherry in Persian writing.
