The colonisation of Easter Island began in 1840 following the annexing of New Zealand by the British, with inhabitants from France, Germany, and Chile also seeking residence on the island. However, archaeologists believe that the first inhabitants arrived around 400 AD. 

A recognisable feature of Easter Island is the 900 giant stone figures that surround the island, said to have been created from compressed volcanic ash by craftsmen many centuries ago. Showcasing human heads, the stones are said to represent the spirits of ancestors, chiefs, or other high-ranking males who lived on the island.
