After the death of Valentinian in 375, Gratian became emperor in Western Rome. Together with Theodosius, who succeeded his uncle Valens in 379 as the emperor of Eastern Rome, he made Christianity the state religion.
Gratian was the first Roman emperor to renounce the title of Pontifex Maximus, which was previously carried by all emperors since Augustus. Gratian was considered a good military leader and was able to successfully defend the Rhine border against frequently invading Alemanni. His crossing of the Rhine during the Battle of Argentovaria was the last by a Roman emperor.
