A military ritual that has become commonplace in Canadian culture is none other than the Changing of the Guard. Inspired by the procession first introduced in the United Kingdom around the 1600’s, the procession was designed to show military discipline and to highlight the strength of the guard.
Introduced in the Canadian capital of Ottawa in 1959, the ceremony of the Changing of the Guard in Canada is a special celebration that occurs daily from late June up until late August.
In recognition of this unique ceremony, The Royal Canadian Mint has released a stunning six-part collection, with this Changing of the Guard 1/2oz Silver Coin the 4th in the series.
Shown on the reverse of this edition is a realistic interpretation of the procession of the changing of the guard, depicting guards playing their instruments.
The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II created by Susanna Blunt.
Also featured in this collection are designs centered on iconic themes including Polar Bear, Parliament Hill, Maple Branch with Five Leaves, The Beaver, and The Great Outdoors.
