San Marino, a country with a population of just 32000, is the oldest republic in the world. The microstate which is completely surrounded by Italy entered into a monetary union with its “big neighbour” on 22nd March 1862.
However, San Marino reserved the right to mint its own Lire coins.
In 1864, the first San Marino coin finally appeared, which, like all its successors, was also valid in Italy and the Vatican City State.
Just like the Vatican Lira, the San Marino Lire coins are now highly coveted collector’s items of great value.
