Constantius II was the second eldest son of Constantine the Great and his second wife Fausta after Constantine II. Historians consider him the mastermind behind the murder of his family, committed by the military shortly after the death of Constantine the Great.
Only his sons Constantine II, Constans and also Constantius II, as well as their cousins – brothers Constantius Gallus and Julian –, who were spared because of their young age, remained alive. He was later able to prevail in the civil war against his brothers and the usurper Magnus Magnentius, and to gain absolute rule.
