On Saturday 6th May 2023 the Coronation of His Majesty The King will take place at Westminster Abbey. This historic event marks the crowning of King Charles III and is the first coronation of a new monarch in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries since 1953.
To mark the occasion, we are proud to introduce the first ever coronation 50p coin featuring an all-new design specially created for this iconic royal event. The reverse features Westminster Abbey and the King's crown and cypher designed by Natasha Jenkins.
The obverse features the first official crowned portrait of the monarch, designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings and personally approved by His Majesty the King. The crowned effigy is reserved specifically for commemorative and collectible coins and will not feature on circulated coins, making it a true collectors item.
The crown itself, known as the Tudor Crown, is also of historical significance. Although the crown was destroyed in the 1640s its image has been used on crowned portraits of Kings during the 20th Century and features on His Majesty’s cypher.
In keeping with tradition, The King’s portrait faces to the left, the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth.
We expect this to a be a very popular release so be sure to add it to your collection today.
