Description

2020 marks 50 years since the first official Pride UK event, a momentous occasion in the LGBTQ community which has inspired those involved to continue preaching the message of equality into society for various decades. However, an event that was significant in the emergence of an era of resistance and revolution, was none other than the police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York City. Whilst raids were common, this event was different as it sparked an uprising of the LGBTQ community in fighting discrimination, and a movement towards equality.

The rights of LGBTQ+ people in Britain have faced considerable scrutiny in the last century, however, the community has come a long way and continues to shape political rights and social movements in the present day.

Celebrating the progress of Pride UK in inspiring today’s generations to be proud of their sexuality, this Unique Silver Proof 2022 50p Coin is a special release that highlights the spirit of the LGBTQ+ community superbly.

In collaboration with Pride in London, The Royal Mint has formulated this striking release which portrays all Pride stands for in intricate detail. Featured on the reverse of this stunning edition is a colourful design created by artist and activist, Dominique Holmes, that represents the positivity and solidarity of the Pride movement.

Inspired by the original rainbow flag colours formulated by the artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, this Coin showcases illustrations of different rainbows each highlighting the values of Pride UK: protest, visibility, unity, and equality.

Depicted on the obverse of this fantastic coin is Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, illustrating its legal tender status.

With this representing the first time the UK’s LGBTQ+ community has been celebrated on a UK coin; this is the ideal way to show your support for pride!
