Mount Rushmore is a world-renowned monument located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, United States. It features the massive carvings of the heads of four American presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, each measuring 60 feet (18 meters) high. The monument was created by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln between 1927 and 1941.
The concept for Mount Rushmore originated in the early 1920s when South Dakota historian Doane Robinson came up with the idea of creating a monument to honour the great leaders of the West. After several years of fundraising and planning, Borglum was commissioned to create the sculpture in 1927. The work was carried out using dynamite, jackhammers, and chisels, with workers hanging on ropes to access the high ledges where the carving took place. The project was completed in 1941, just months after Gutzon Borglum passed away.
Today, Mount Rushmore is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, attracting millions of visitors each year. Visitors can take a scenic drive through the Black Hills to reach the monument and explore the nearby park, which offers a variety of recreational activities, such as hiking, camping, and wildlife watching. The monument also features a visitor centre and museum, which offer educational exhibits on the history of the site and the sculptors who created it.
