This Byzantine gold coin from the time of Emperor Andronikos II is a Hyperpyron. The bowl-shaped coin was issued for the first time under Emperor Alexios I in 1092.
On the obverse, it shows a depiction of Jesus Christ. On the reverse, you can see Andronikos II, Jesus Christ and his son Michael IX, respectively his grandson Andronikos III.
Around 300 years later, the last bowl coins were minted under John VI (1347-1354). The Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II was born on 25th March 1259. As the oldest son, he was the successor after the death of his father in 1282. He introduced reforms to counteract the financial crisis in the empire.
However, the peaceful emperor found it difficult to ward off his enemies. After the death of his son Michael IX, Emperor Andronikos II excluded his grandson Andronikos III from the succession to the throne.
He rebelled and plunged the country into a civil war. The victorious grandson forced his grandfather to abdicate in 1328. Four years later, Andronikos II died.
