The Allies greatest advantage over the Axis forces on D-Day was their complete control of the skies. The Luftwaffe was mostly assigned to protect the German heartland from Allied bombers and to counter the Russian threat to the East, which meant that there were very few left to protect what became the Western Front. Allied fighters such as the Hawker Typhoon, P-47 Thunderbolt and Supermarine Spitfire were largely relegated to support duties during the Landings due to the lack of enemy air power. Instead, they were used as artillery spotters and reconnaissance planes. Produced in remembrance of the incredible sacrifices made by so many during the landings, the 3,950 Fighters commemorative is part of the D-Day 75th Anniversary Collection and features an image of three Spitfires with the combined flags of the Allied Forces above.
