Celebrate the 80th anniversary of the iconic raid by RAF 617 Squadron thereafter known as the 'Dambusters' with this stunning £2 coin featuring a full colour print.
These are the first ever official RAF issue coins to feature the portrait of King Charles III. They are licensed with the RAF and bear the official RAF logo making them a perfect collectors item.
The crest of the Dambusters squadron features a stylised representation of a breached dam with water flowing out from it. It has the motto "Après moi, le déluge" inscribed around the perimeter which translates to "After me, the flood" in English, a reference to a quote attributed to the French King Louis XV.
The crest was designed by the squadron's commanding officer, Wing Commander Guy Gibson, and it was approved by King George VI in 1943. The crest is meant to symbolise the squadron's successful bombing raid on the dams of the Ruhr Valley in Germany during World War II, which caused significant damage to German industry and infrastructure.
The Dambusters squadron is widely celebrated for their heroic and innovative efforts during the war, and their crest has become an iconic symbol of their bravery and ingenuity.
