Constantine II was the firstborn son of Constantine the Great and his second wife Fausta. He was made Caesar only one year after his birth, and at the age of 10 he took over the leadership of Gaul and defended the Rhine border against invading Germanic peoples from his residence in Trier.
After the death of Constantine the Great, he proclaimed himself Augustus with his two younger brothers Constans and Constantius II, and, as the eldest, carried the title of Senior Augustus. His share of the empire consisted of Gaul, Hispania and a part of Africa. In the later blazing civil war between the three brothers, Constantine II was lured into an ambush in Italy and killed.
