Nelson Mandela is the most famous person in the history of South Africa, and after his death he is still considered a shining example in the fight for freedom over oppression and social injustice. He played a leading role in the transition from apartheid to the foundation of a democratic nation state which respects the principles of equality in South Africa, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1993. After a long and hard battle for freedom, on 9th May 1994, he was elected the first black President of the Republic of South Africa.

During his lifetime, Nelson Mandela was considered a shining political and moral role model by many people.
