A 2500-year-old coin from the Greek city state of Miletos – minted in half a century BC. The city of Miletos had already been a major trading centre in the 8th century BC. Of paramount importance, however, is less so the active trade, but rather, a groundbreaking invention: In order to replace the sheer barter system, coins were first minted in Miletos and other city-states from Asia Minor such as in the neighbouring Kingdom of Lydia in the 6th century BC.
This historically significant coin from Miletos is derived from the mid-6th century BC (approx. 550-500 BC) and is thus one of the oldest coins in history. It depicts the heraldic animal of the city, a lion, on the obverse as well as a “Quadratum Incusum” (coin die) with star motif on the reverse.
