Benedict XVI is an emeritus pope and was the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the state of Vatican City from 19th April 2005 to his resignation on 28th February 2013.
He was the first German pope since Adrian VI (1523) and after Celestine V (1294) only the second pope in history who voluntarily resigned from his office.
