Sol Invictus - the unconquered sun god - December 25th was a religious holiday even before Christians began to celebrate Christmas.
Since 274 AD, the Romans celebrated the birth of Sol Invictus on this day, and Christians also celebrated Christmas on this day and adopted it as the birthday of Jesus Christ.
