A genius said to be way ahead of his time, Alan Turing was one of the most influential British figures of the 20th century, orchestrating significant breakthroughs in computer science, whilst also serving his nation during the second world war. Regarding the latter, Turing was pivotal in the efforts of the British Government to decode the Enigma encryption devices used by the German forces. As such, many believe that without the help of Turing, the war may have lasted several more years and led to a considerably larger number of fatalities.
Whilst known for his wartime legacy, his work in artificial intelligence was what sparked the creation of what became known as the ‘Turing Test’. Turing deliberated over whether machines could imitate human conversation – this became a key foundation in the research of AI.
