Occupying a central role in the establishment of India as an independent state, Gandhi, otherwise known as Mahatma Gandhi, is widely recognised as one of the most influential political figures of the twentieth century.
Gandhi’s devotion to the nationalist movement challenging the British rule of India, was sparked by the experiences he had undergone when moving to South-eastern Africa to practice law - he underwent immense discrimination and segregation.
Upon returning to India, the government enacted discriminative laws such as preventing Indian citizens from voting, culminating in the creation of a resistance led by Gandhi to push for independence from the United Kingdom.
Many mass protests and boycotts later, India finally became an independent state in 1947, however, Gandhi only saw this for a few months before he was assassinated by a Hindu Extremist in 1948.
