Constans was the youngest son of Constantine the Great and his second wife Fausta. After the death of his father in May 337, he and his brothers Constantine II and Constantius II divided the empire amongst themselves at the conference of Viminacium at the end of 337 and the beginning of 338.
Constans, who ruled in Italy, Africa and the Balkan Peninsula but, unlike his brothers, had no legislative powers, soon quarreled with his brother Constantine II, leading to a military conflict where Constantine II was subsequently killed. In 350, Constans himself was assassinated by supporters of the rival emperor Magnentius while on the run.
