Marcus Aurelius Probus, born in 232, first pursued a military career, where he earned the esteem and respect of his troops. In 276, directly after the death of Emperor Tacitus, his troops proclaimed him rival emperor.
After managing to defeat his adversary Florianus, the legitimate emperor, his position was ratified by the senate. He was the last emperor to rely on this formal legitimation.
His reign was regarded very positively, especially due to his many military successes (including against the Goths, Franks and Alemanni). In 282, he was assassinated by mutinous soldiers in his native city.
