This 2005 50p was released to celebrate 250 years since the publication of Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language published in April 1755.
Although not the first dictorary, Johnson’s Dictionary was far superior to the other offerings of the time featuring definitions of 42,773 words and taking him seven years to single-handedly complete.
The coin design pays homage to this defining book in the English language by providing a dictionary definition of the word ‘Fifty Pence’ including etymology, pronunciation and word class.
This highly collectible circulated coin is presented in an exclusive Koin Club blister card, ready to add to your collection.
