Prevalent during the latter stages of the Jurassic Period around 150 million years ago, the Stegosaurus was one of the most recognisable dinosaur species ever discovered, distinguished by the two rows of bony plates that covered its back. The plant-eating reptile, said to weigh up to 10,000 pounds was discovered in 1876 by M.P. Welch in a Quarry in Colorado – it now occupies the position of state dinosaur in Colorado.
The imposing Stegosaurus is depicted in superb detail on this release by the Royal Canadian Mint, featuring a uniquely shaped 2oz Silver $5 Coin which showcases the striking reptile in impeccable detail. The dinosaur is pictured stooping low to the floor, with its spiked tail raised high in the air – representing an accurate portrayal of the dinosaur’s presence.
Each coin is individually numbered and is housed in its own custom-shaped presentation capsule, showcasing the release brilliantly.
